This ensures that our clients are fully supported from order date through to the installation and subsequent operation of our products.

Umbilical Handling & Storage FAQs

When installing an umbilical cable onto a reeler, it is crucial to ensure that the umbilical is protected from damage. This is achieved by correct selection of reeler geometry, ensuring consistent tension during spooling and controlling fleet angle (or fleeting angle). Fibron can give further advice, based on standard industry practice and also tailored to specific applications and circumstances.

An umbilical cable should be stored on a suitable wooden or steel drum with its flanges vertical, on a level dry surface (or elevated, if near soft or wet ground), chocked to prevent movement. If the umbilical contains non-collapse resistant hoses, they should be maintained at suitable internal pressure to prevent crushing. Exposed cable and hose ends should be sealed with suitable caps or tape to prevent moisture ingress. Cable loose ends should be secured to the drum flange. The stored umbilical should be protected from weather and UV by storing indoors or under a suitable cover.
