Offshore Renewables

Offshore Renewable Energy

Subsea cables play a critical role in the installation, operation and maintenance of offshore renewable energy generating equipment, such as offshore wind, tidal energy, wave energy, and floating solar farms.

Fibron can design and manufacture multi-functional cables that comprise almost any combination of cables and hoses that are necessary to transmit power, data, video, gas and fluids between the surface and the submerged equipment.

The primary functions of our cables usually include the provision of electrical power, control signals, and fibre-optics for the monitoring and operation of various subsea and floating systems. But since our products are bespoke, we can design cables and umbilicals for almost any purpose. As well as providing services to offshore wind, tidal energy, wave energy and floating solar installations, our cables and umbilicals are frequently used for the operation of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), underwater surveys and ocean research.

tidal energy

Tidal Energy

In addition to the transmission of harvested electricity, umbilicals may comprise fibre-optic cables for the regular monitoring of the turbine.

Hydraulic hoses or electric cables may also be used to make adjustments to the orientation of the turbine in relation to the direction of the tidal current. Maintenance teams may use the data to monitor performance and identify any adjustments that may be necessary to optimise performance.

These umbilicals are designed to withstand the rigours of the harsh marine environment, including high winds and strong tidal currents. Our expertise in dynamic umbilicals means they can be designed to flex with the movement of the water.

Wave Energy

Wave energy converters, which capture the energy of ocean waves, are often located in deep water, making on-site maintenance challenging. Subsea umbilicals simplify this process by enabling real-time monitoring and control of the devices.

They connect the converters to the power grid and may also be used to relay important data to onshore control centres, to carry fluids to provide cooling for electrical components, and to provide hydraulic power for adjustments. Our dynamic umbilicals and cables are designed to be flexible, allowing for movement in the ever-changing ocean conditions.

Floating Solar

Subsea umbilicals are used to connect floating solar panels to onshore substations. These umbilicals carry the electricity generated by the solar panels, enable monitoring of the system’s performance, and allow operators to make adjustments remotely.

In addition, subsea umbilicals may incorporate fibre-optic cables for data transmission and monitoring purposes. Because the floating arrays are constantly moving with the waves and the tides, our dynamic cables provide the perfect solution.

Here to help

If you need an umbilical or cable and can’t immediately see what you’re looking for, please do get in touch. Most of our work is bespoke to the needs of a particular project, so we can’t show all of our capabilities on our website. As experts in our field, if you need a cable or umbilical, particularly for use in a challenging environment like offshore, there’s a good chance that we’ll be able to help.
