Bespoke dynamic cables engineered for repeated movement, bending, reeling and demanding subsea duty cycles.
Dynamic Cable Specialists
Fibron designs and manufactures bespoke dynamic cables for subsea, offshore and other demanding applications where repeated movement forms part of the operating duty. Unlike a static cable, a dynamic cable may be repeatedly bent, reeled, tensioned, rotated, deployed and recovered throughout its service life. These mechanical demands must be considered alongside the electrical, optical and environmental requirements from the beginning of the design process.
Our engineers can develop dynamic subsea cables combining power, signal, data and fibre-optic services with the strength, flexibility and fatigue resistance required by the application. Construction can be tailored around the customer's handling system, winch, sheaves, operating depth, suspended load, cable diameter, weight, buoyancy and expected deployment cycle.
Fibron's cable and umbilical design service, versatile manufacturing capability and extensive testing and qualification facilities allow us to support a dynamic cable from initial concept through prototype manufacture, qualification and production supply.

Engineered for Continuous Movement
A dynamic cable is engineered for an operating environment in which movement is expected rather than exceptional. Repeated bending over sheaves, reeling and unreeling, changing suspended loads, vessel motion and deployment cycles can all influence the design.
These conditions place particular demands on conductor arrangement, lay geometry, reinforcement, materials and the interaction between individual cable elements. A construction that performs well in a static installation may not be appropriate where the cable is repeatedly flexed and handled.
Fibron considers the complete operating cycle, including deployment and recovery, minimum bend radius, winch tension, sheave diameter, torque, rotation, crush loads and weight in water. This helps ensure that the cable works with the handling system rather than becoming a limitation within it.
Our broader subsea cable capability supports both static and dynamic applications, with each construction developed around its precise duty.
Bespoke Dynamic Cable Design
There is no single standard construction for a dynamic cable. The optimum design depends on the electrical services, optical requirements, mechanical loads, handling equipment and expected number and severity of operating cycles.
During the design process, Fibron can evaluate conductor size, voltage, screening, fibre count, tensile strength, bend radius, torque, weight, buoyancy, crush resistance, abrasion and fatigue performance.
Strength members may use high-tensile steel wire, aramid or other high-performance fibres depending on the required balance between mechanical capacity, flexibility, diameter and weight. Polymer selection is equally important, particularly where the cable must tolerate seawater, temperature, pressure, chemical exposure and frequent handling.
Where a project is still in development, Fibron can also manufacture prototype cables and short qualification lengths so that handling behaviour, materials and interfaces can be assessed before the production design is finalised.
Power, Signal, Data & Fibre Optics
Dynamic subsea cables frequently need to perform several functions at the same time. A single construction may carry electrical power, control signals, telemetry, data and fibre-optic communications while also withstanding repeated mechanical movement.
Fibron has extensive experience in electro-optical power and signal cables, enabling electrical and optical services to be integrated within compact, robust constructions.
Where several functions need to be combined within one cable, Fibron's composite cable capability provides a further route to integrating power, signal, data, fibre optics and mechanical strength into one engineered package.
This can be particularly valuable for ROVs, towed systems, subsea tools and monitoring equipment where space, weight, cable drag and handling complexity all affect overall system performance.
Armoured & Load-Bearing Dynamic Cables
Some dynamic cables form part of the mechanical load path as well as carrying electrical or optical services. In these applications, tensile strength, armour design and rotational stability become central to the cable architecture.
Fibron has proven experience with balanced steel-wire armouring and high-performance fibre reinforcement. These systems can provide substantial load-bearing capability while helping manage torque, rotation, overall diameter and weight.
Fibron's ROV main lift cables demonstrate this combination of mechanical strength and multifunctional transmission, combining load-bearing armour with power, signal, telemetry and optical services.
Similar engineering principles can be applied to other dynamic cables used with remotely operated equipment, towed systems and specialist subsea machinery.
Dynamic Cables vs Dynamic Umbilicals
Dynamic cables typically combine electrical, optical and mechanical functions within a construction designed for repeated movement, flexing, reeling and deployment.
Where an application also requires hydraulic services, chemical injection or other fluid functions, a more complex dynamic umbilical may be required. Fibron also designs and manufactures dynamic electro-hydraulic control umbilicals for intervention and IWOCS applications.
Keeping these product types distinct allows the cable or umbilical architecture to be developed around the actual service requirements of the subsea system.
Applications for Dynamic Subsea Cables
Dynamic cables can be developed for a wide range of subsea systems in which movement, deployment and recovery form part of normal operation.
- ROVs and remotely operated subsea equipment
- Towed sensors and subsea instrumentation
- Offshore energy systems
- Offshore renewable energy equipment
- Naval and defence applications
- Subsea tooling and specialist deployment systems
Dynamic Cable Testing & Qualification
Testing is particularly important where a cable will experience repeated bending and mechanical cycling throughout its operating life.
Fibron's in-house testing and analysis capability can be used to verify the characteristics most relevant to a dynamic cable. Typical qualification work can include reeling and unreeling tests, fatigue testing, tensile testing, crush and clamp testing and bend-stiffness assessment.
Depending on the construction, electrical and optical verification can also form part of the qualification programme. Test requirements can be developed around recognised subsea standards or a project-specific regime agreed with the customer.
This allows cable behaviour to be assessed under representative mechanical conditions before the final product enters service.
Complete Dynamic Cable & Termination Packages
A dynamic cable has to perform as part of a complete mechanical and electrical system. End terminations, bend transition, sealing, connectors, handling equipment and the way loads are transferred into the cable can all affect its reliability.
Fibron's terminations and ancillaries capability includes mechanical termination assemblies, bend stiffeners, bend restrictors, electrical and optical connectors, reels, handling systems and other associated equipment.
By coordinating cable design, manufacture, terminations and testing through one supplier, interface risk can be reduced and the complete assembly can be engineered around the application.

Dynamic Cable FAQs
What is a dynamic cable?
A dynamic cable is designed for an application in which repeated movement forms part of normal operation. It may be bent, reeled, deployed, recovered or subjected to changing tensile and rotational loads throughout its service life.
What makes dynamic cables different from static cables?
Dynamic cables must be engineered around repeated movement and fatigue as well as electrical, optical and environmental performance. Static cables generally experience less mechanical cycling after installation.
Can dynamic cables contain fibre optics and power conductors?
Yes. Fibron can design dynamic electro-optical and composite constructions combining power, signal, data and fibre-optic services within one cable.
How are dynamic cables tested?
Depending on the application, qualification may include reeling and unreeling, cyclic fatigue, tensile, crush, clamp and bend-stiffness testing, together with electrical and optical verification.
